Art in the form of tattoo: a conversation with Johnny Benning

Johnny Benning @johnnyxbenning is a tattoo artist. The tattoos he creates are true works of art: carefully crafted, unique, and full of character. What is his tattooing style?  How did his story begin? You’ll discover all of this in our conversation. Johnny comes from the Netherlands and, in his private life, is a proud husband and father of three. When he’s not tattooing in the studio, he usually spends time with his family or indulges in his nerdy passions. He is a big fan of Magic and Pokémon, and he also loves collecting cards.

PL: Johnny Benning @johnnyxbenning jest tatuażystą i artystą. Tatuaże, które tworzy, są prawdziwymi dziełami sztuki: starannie wykonanymi, unikalnymi i pełnymi charakteru. W jakim stylu tatuuje? Jak zaczęła się jego historia? Tego wszystkiego dowiecie się z naszej rozmowy. Johnny pochodzi z Holandii, a w życiu prywatnym jest dumnym mężem i ojcem trójki dzieci. Kiedy nie tatuuje w studiu, zazwyczaj spędza czas z rodziną albo oddaje się swoim nerdowskim pasjom. Jest wielkim fanem Magic i Pokémonów, a także uwielbia kolekcjonować karty.

Zapraszam do rozmowy z tym niezwykłym artystą, którego twórczość naprawdę mnie zachwyca. Johnny pokazuje, że tatuaż to forma sztuki, którą możemy nie tylko „nosić na skórze”, lecz także interpretować i podziwiać.

ENG: You’re an artist, and you create art in the form of tattoos. Every person who wears your work becomes a “walking art gallery.” What does it feel like knowing your art becomes part of someone’s life and story?

For me it’s still a honor that people choose me to be the one to give them that permanent art. And seeing my clients happy gives me more fulfillment than the tattoo itself.

PL: Jesteś artystą i tworzysz sztukę w formie tatuaży. Każda osoba, która nosi Twoje prace, staje się „chodzącą galerią sztuki”. Jakie to uczucie wiedzieć, że Twoja sztuka staje się częścią czyjegoś życia i historii?

Dla mnie to wciąż ogromny zaszczyt, że ludzie wybierają właśnie mnie, abym to ja mógł stworzyć dla nich tę trwałą sztukę. A widok zadowolonych klientów daje mi większe poczucie spełnienia niż sam tatuaż.

ENG: How would you describe the style and aesthetic of your tattoos in three words?

Bold black and grey. 

PL: Jak opisałbyś styl i estetykę swoich tatuaży w trzech słowach?

Wyrazisty, czarny, szary

ENG: What do your tattoos say about you? Do you remember your very first tattoo, and what it was?

Coming from the hardcore punk scene I fell in love with tattoos. And as soon as I got my first  I was hooked and never stopped getting them. I got my first tattoo at 18 and it was a dagger on my shoulders going from one side to the other through my neck haha :) Shortly after that I got my whole chest done. I never really get tattoos that have a special meaning but just look cool and that’s what means the most to me. And they are a reminder of the time I got them and who I was at that moment. 

PL: Co Twoje tatuaże mówią o Tobie? Czy pamiętasz swój pierwszy tatuaż i czym był?

Pochodząc ze sceny hardcore punk, zakochałem się w tatuażach. Gdy tylko zrobiłem swój pierwszy, wciągnęło mnie na dobre i nigdy nie przestałem ich robić. Swój pierwszy tatuaż zrobiłem w wieku 18 lat, był to sztylet na ramionach, biegnący z jednej strony na drugą przez szyję, haha :) Niedługo potem wytatuowałem całą klatkę piersiową. Tak naprawdę nie wybieram tatuaży ze względu na głębokie czy szczególne znaczenie, jeśli wygląda fajnie, to dla mnie najważniejsze. Są raczej przypomnieniem czasu, w którym je zrobiłem, i tego, kim byłem w tamtym momencie.

ENG: Let’s take a step back. How did your journey with tattooing start, and how has your career path developed since then?

It started the correct way by getting an apprenticeship. But that changed quickly after 3 months of the owner of the shop leaving. After that I started tattooing myself and friends to get experience and kinda learned everything myself the hard way from making mistakes. 

PL: Zróbmy krok wstecz. Jak rozpoczęła się Twoja przygoda z tatuażami i jak od tego czasu rozwijała się Twoja kariera?

Zaczęło się we właściwy sposób od odbycia praktyki. Jednak sytuacja szybko się zmieniła po trzech miesiącach, kiedy właściciel studia odszedł. Po tym zacząłem tatuować siebie i znajomych, żeby zdobyć doświadczenie, i w zasadzie wszystkiego nauczyłem się sam, w trudny sposób, popełniając błędy.

ENG: Who inspires you: other tattoo artists, painters, musicians? Or maybe people completely outside the art world? Where do you look for creative inspiration? 

In the beginning I looked up to some tattooers. But mostly I get inspired from just people living their dream and become successful from passion. 

PL: Kto Cię inspiruje: inni tatuażyści, malarze, muzycy? A może osoby całkowicie spoza świata sztuki? Gdzie szukasz twórczej inspiracji?

Na początku podziwiałem niektórych tatuażystów. Ale głównie inspirują mnie ludzie, którzy realizują swoje marzenia i osiągają sukces dzięki pasji.

ENG: The music and concerts seem to play a big role in your life. How do they shape your style and creative process? And if your life had a soundtrack, what would it be? 

Music has always been an important part of my life. Ive been going to concerts as long as I can remember. Now I love sharing my craft with the music world. I got to tattoo a lot of great musicians over the last couple of years like Taka and Ryota from One Ok Rock and Teddy Swims. Hanging out with music artist like them and hearing them talk about their journey and seeing their world is also very inspiring. 

I can’t work without music in the background. My soundtrack is all over the place. From ganster rap to country to metal and everything in between.  

PL: Muzyka i koncerty wydają się odgrywać dużą rolę w Twoim życiu. Jak kształtują Twój styl i proces twórczy? A gdyby Twoje życie miało być ścieżkę dźwiękową, jaka ona by była?

Muzyka zawsze była ważną częścią mojego życia. Chodzę na koncerty, odkąd tylko pamiętam. Teraz uwielbiam dzielić się swoim rzemiosłem ze światem muzyki. W ciągu ostatnich kilku lat miałem okazję tatuować wielu świetnych muzyków, takich jak Taka i Ryota z One Ok Rock oraz Teddy Swims. Spędzanie czasu z artystami muzycznymi takimi jak oni, słuchanie ich opowieści o drodze kariery i poznawanie ich świata jest również bardzo inspirujące.

Nie potrafię pracować bez muzyki w tle. Moja ścieżka dźwiękowa jest bardzo różnorodna, od ganster rapu, przez country, metal, aż po wszystko pomiędzy.

ENG: What matters most to you when creating a tattoo: the process, the final result, the emotions, or something else? 

What come first for me is to have a nice experience with my client and making something together from his ideas combined with mine. I don’t want to say exactly to client how it should look, I always want their input so it becomes more personal. 

PL: Co jest dla Ciebie najważniejsze przy tworzeniu tatuażu: sam proces, efekt końcowy, emocje, czy coś innego?

Dla mnie najważniejsze jest, aby klient miał przyjemne doświadczenie i żebyśmy wspólnie stworzyli coś, łącząc jego pomysły z moimi. Nie chcę dokładnie mówić klientowi, jak tatuaż powinien wyglądać, zawsze zależy mi na jego wkładzie, aby projekt był bardziej osobisty.
